Whilst a Van may be the most expensive individual item you have for your business the tools of your trade in combination are probably the most important for your livelyhood.
Insuring a van is easy and we have listed the main van insurance companies on the right of this page, however tools cover is harder to get particularly covering tools kept in a van overnight.
Below is a summary of how the various insurers deal with the issue of tool cover:
Direct Line are fairly explict about tools cover and state "Goods in transit and tools are not covered under this policy"
Its worth noting that Direct Line do not have a dedicated Van insurance site, it is a shared quote and buy site with the car insurance system which has other limitations.
Churchill do not mention tools at all even in their policy booklet as their Van insurance section links directly to Car insurance (including a car insurance policy booklet).
eVan Insurance - do not cover tools
eVan state in their policy wording "Exclusions to Part A Section 1...goods, tools or samples in connection with any trade or profession"
This means that the tools will not be covered in any circumstances unlike other insurance companies
Gladiator Insurance - cover tools
Gladiator insurance do not cover tools as part of their van insurance policy however they do provide a standalone tools insurance policy - with a limit of £2000 - while they are in your van as long as the doors are locked and a steering lock applied when not in use.
More Th>n insurance - cover tools
More Th>n provide tools in transit cover of up to £500 for loss or damage inlcuding theft. This is not a significant limit on tools cover however they are at least prepared to offer tools cover unlike most of the others and are one of the very few to offer it as part of a van insurance policy.
Be Wiser van insurance - do not cover tools
Be Wiser do not cover tools, they state in the "personal belongings" section under "What is not covered" section "Any goods, tools or samples which are carried as part of any trade or business"

No Tools left in this Van overnight?
How many Tradesmen have this sticker on their van? How useful is it really?
In reality how practical is it for you to empty your van every night and where do you put all your tools and equipment?
However inconvenient it may be to empty the tools out of your van overnight it is something that you should do because the majority of standard van insurance policies do not cover tools which are stolen out of the back of your van.
