Mecedes offer three main types of van - in ascending size order: the Vito, the Sprinter and the Vario
Mercedes Vito van
The Vito van is the Mercedes answer to the Ford Transit, it comes in three main derivatives: the Vito Panel Van, the Vito Dualiner and the Vito Traveliner.
The Vito panel van is what we will concentrate on here as it is the most popular from a tradesman perspective

The Vito comes in four different engine options all based on the Mercedes-Benz OM 642 Diesel Common Rail direct engine. The four types are the 109 CDI (95bhp), 111 CDI (116bhp), 115 CDI (150bhp) and the 120 CDI (204bhp)
In terms of load sizes the Vito has three main lengths and max load weights:
Compact:
length 2424mm,
width 1650mm,
height 1353mm,
max payload 980kg
Long:
length 2667mm,
width 1650mm,
height 1353mm/1760mm,
max payload 965kg/915kg
Extra long:
length 2897mm,
width 1650mm,
height 1348mm,
max payload 930kg

Vito Sport Van

The Vtio Sport Van is the Vito on steroids - it has a turbo-charged and fuel injected engine of either 2148cc (115CDI) or 2987cc (120CDI) size and the 120CDI can accelerate from 0-60mph in 8.3 seconds so if you want to get to your next job quickly then this is the van for you however you'll need deep pockets to cope with the fuel consumption of 38.1mpg however you're certain to impress anyone if you turn up in a Vito Sport-X van.
Mercedes Vito Taxi
In July 2008 Mercedes launched the first alternative the the traditional London Cab to be approved by the PCO. The standard Vito has gone through some substantial modifications to meet the exacting PCO standards including having 6 passenger seats, electronic opening sliding side doors, attack resistant divide and a rear-steer axle to name but a few. However it is powered by the well proven Mercedes 2.2 litre common rail diesel engine which power standard Vito vans. If the Vito can stand up the rigours of London Taxi driving then they should easily stand up to normal van usage.

Mercedes Sprinter ECO-start
Mercedes recognise the need to save van drivers money where possible and to help the environment so they have introduced the ECO-start option on the Sprinter vans. The ECO-Start is an option which automatically stops the engine when the van is stationary for mor than 2 seconds, the gearbox is in neutral and the clutch is up. The engine then automatically restarts when the clutch is pressed down. Mercedes claim that the ECO-Start can cut fuel consumption on the Sprinter by up to 10%.
Mercedes Vario Van

The Vario is the largest of the Mercedes Van range coming in a panal van or chassis cab variety. It is the serious workhorse of the Mercedes range coming in 2 body lengths and 2 roof height derivatives and has a max payload of 3,700kg for those seriously heavy loads.
Since the Vario comes in at over 3.5tons even for the Medium wheel base version it is often not in the standard van insurance criteria for many insurers so you may need to look at more specialist insurers.
